It’s that time of the year when the nighthawks return to their nests in the hills above Okanagan Falls, where they’ll spend their days like all of us basking in the warm summer sun, while their nights are spent dutifully watching over the vines at Nighthawk Vineyards. Summer is a season of rediscovery here in the Okanagan, and much like these beautiful birds we too return to familiar locales this time of year, to be met with a handful of pleasant surprises. Such is the case at Nighthawk Vineyards, a cozy little mountain winery built along the shores of Green…

Wild Goose Vineyards 2016 Pinot Gris won top honors at the fifth annual Cascadia Wine Competition in Hood River, Oregon. The Pinot Gris earned Best White Wine and Best of Show on its way to topping the field of 948 wines from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Idaho. “We received word of our eight gold medals at the Cascadia Wine Competition one at a time by email,” says Leslie Matheson, Wild Goose Vineyards & Winery marketing manager. “I kept refreshing my email and once we were at five we realized we had more golds than swimmer Michael Phelps at his…

Spring Picnics with a new sparkling wine at River Stone Winery Owner and winemaker Ted Kane and assistant general manager Julie Planiden at River Stone have reason to celebrate and, as of this season, they now have a new sparkling wine to celebrate with! For the first time, River Stone will release a very unique sparkling wine made from Merlot. The grapes were pressed immediately so that the juice received very little colour. The Sparkling White Merlot NV is a slightly off-dry, Provençal-style rosé with the added bonus of bubbles. It is packaged in a beautiful bottle with a crown…

“The Summerhill family of over 150 employees is truly thrilled to share the excitement of their glorious award – THE BEST CHARDONNAY IN THE WORLD for the 2014 Chardonnay Icewine at the Chardonnay du Monde® 2017 competition in Burgundy, France!” says Stephen Cipes, proprietor of Summerhill Pyramid Organic Winery. “Winning the number one Chardonnay wine in the world is a triumph for organic growing and winemaking. It recognizes being in harmony with nature, and the Okanagan Valley’s pristine growing conditions, which have been bringing pride to Canadians for 25 years.” “Winning the number one Chardonnay wine in the world is…

Ask folks touring the Okanagan which wineries are on their itinerary and Summerhill Pyramid Winery is recurrently top of mind. Given Summerhill’s commitment as an organic and biodynamic operation with award-winning wines and stunning setting, it is Canada’s most visited winery. Ezra Cipes, CEO, says, “We welcome many visitors from all over the world every day and want to honour each one. To fulfil that pledge, we’re elated this season to expand our facilities, programs, and staff.” Summerhill will grow from one to three tasting rooms with a reception gallery to greet arrivals and to direct guests to tasting rooms,…

It’s been said that the season is never over until the birds say it’s so, and while the bite of autumn winds may be slowly filling the valley, the summer season is still in full swing on the northern fringe of Oliver at Hidden Chapel Winery. With harvest just around the corner, the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes give purple freckles to the still lush greens of the forested gardens that adorn the property. Despite the chill in the air, it is still very much summer here. The South Okanagan is more known for its reds, but at this cozy little tasting…

Serendipity Winery has never shied away from embracing change. In fact, embracing change has been a guiding philosophy of the winery since it first opened. And this summer will see a big change at Serendipity, as the main winery will reopen this August with a new wineshop, a breathtaking patio, and beautiful landscaping to welcome awestruck guests. Until this time, the winery will of course still be open to the public at a temporary facility on the property. Such changes of course, call for proper celebrations! Don’t tell everyone, but nestled amongst Naramata’s eclectic mix of wineries lies a little known distillery where premium spirits are hand-crafted with locally sourced botanicals to produce top shelf vodka and gin. Legend Distilling was inspired by the local tall tales of the prohibition days in Naramata. The distillery was once a doctor’s office where locals could source a ‘prescription’ to keep the prohibition blues at bay. Locals still pop in to the Lounge at Legend Distilling for a pick me up, but these days the home-brewed remedies are finely crafted under the care of owners Dawn and Doug Lennie.…

The first thing a sharp-eyed visitor might notice on a visit to Summerhill Pyramid Winery’s estate vineyard is a great variety of colours among the vine leaves. “We don’t go for that Miracle Gro look here,” winemaker and general manager Eric von Krosigk says. The vineyards, managed with organic, biodynamic and permacultural practices, don’t get the continual cocktail of sprays throughout the season that other properties might. “I think we get an expression of terroir that is much more intense—the vine enters into a symbiotic relationship with the soil,” he says. In that soil are something in the order of…
