It’s that time of the year when the nighthawks return to their nests in the hills above Okanagan Falls, where they’ll spend their days like all of us basking in the warm summer sun, while their nights are spent dutifully watching over the vines at Nighthawk Vineyards. Summer is a season of rediscovery here in the Okanagan, and much like these beautiful birds we too return to familiar locales this time of year, to be met with a handful of pleasant surprises. Such is the case at Nighthawk Vineyards, a cozy little mountain winery built along the shores of Green…

Clos du Soleil winery located on Upper Bench Road, just minutes away from Keremeos, has a reputation for making outstanding single vineyard Bordeaux-style wines that combine the very best of old-world elegance and new-world edge. Their secret? Their unique farming philosophy. This boutique winery features a certified organic vineyard managed using the principals of biodynamics. Biodynamic viticulture is an energetic form of land management that embraces the concept of harmony and encourages a balanced relationship with every creature that inhabits the farm’s ecosystem, including the vineyard workers. This ethical approach is not only wonderful for the environment but it ensures…

Corcelettes Estates Winery sits in the elbow of the Similkameen Valley across from the imposing face of K Mountain. The vistas are endless. The winery is named in honor of winemaker Charlie Baessler’s family farm in Switzerland, not far from the Castle of Grandson. An 11-foot Menhir, an ancient monolith stone, stood on the farm, so there’s a symmetry to the fact that he and his wife, Jesce, and their 16-month old twin girls, Arya and Evelyn –along with their dog Schaze, now make their home and living amongst the dark rocks of the Similkameen. This winery is about family…

They are also the reigning “King of the Platinum” at Wine Press Northwest, where the total number of platinum awards (64) is nearly double that of the next winner. The awards that they received from the recent Cascadia Wine Competition are the first to indicate that the special location of their vineyard merits some special attention. Wines made from grapes grown exclusively on the Golden Mile Bench won three of their four double gold awards. According to Walter…

If you have visited Oliver Twist’s wine shop previously, you may notice changes to the décor. In keeping with the nostalgia theme on their labels, winemaker and owner Gina Harfman has been updating the wine shop with antiques and a beautiful new rustic stained bar top. With lots to look at in the wine shop, there are also lots of activities planned for the spring and early summer. On May13th, they will be hosting a cheese-making course lead by Naomi Fournier, the “Modern Day Milkmaid” from Birdsong Farms in Enderby. The two-hour session will focus on making and pairing wine…

Deborah Wilde, co-owner of Hidden Chapel Winery has wanted to make a sparkling wine for a few years. Her business partner, Rudy Tomazic resisted. The spring release of Hidden Chapel’s new sparkling rosé, Made of Honour proves the woman always wins. And Rudy agrees, it was a great idea. Based on their ever-popular rosé, Blushing Bride, Made of Honour – a blend of mainly Syrah with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier – tastes of summer berries and a hint of cinnamon. Not just for special occasions, sparkling rosé is a great sipper on a hot summer’s day and…

The BC Pinot Noir Celebration (BCPNC) was conceived in 2013 when a collection of passionate Pinot Noir producers across the province got together (over a pint or two of beer, of course) with a vision to create an event for an intimate group of winemakers and Pinot Noir lovers. The idea was simply to get together for a casual evening to enjoy great wine and incredible food, and open the dialogue about Pinot Noir in BC, how it compares to benchmarks around the world, and where the varietal is headed. Now in its fourth year, BCPNC has expanded to not…
