Overlooking Okanagan Lake, Summerland Estate Winery and B&B offers both beautiful scenery and organic and terroir driven wines. Summerland Estate purchased Sonoran Winery in 2016, and immediately transitioned the 3.2-acre vineyard to organic practices. Sharon Xie, executive director, says “Our terroir features limestone, granite and volcanic rock on a silt base, offering the ideal climate and minerals for growing premium estate wines.” The company entrusts its winemaking to Matt Dumayne, of Okanagan Crush Pad, who is both experienced and passionate. Focussing on small batches that are 100 per cent estate grown, each wine is named after the ending digit of…

Wine is big business, but as we know, most big businesses become faceless brands, and the passion for the craft and quality of the product can be lost when the focus turns from the product to increasing sales volume. And this is why boutique wineries are the most fun to explore and often yield the best wines and most interesting stories. Lunessence boutique winery and vineyard is one such gem of winery. Visitors are warmly welcomed and can relax on the spacious patio, listening to classical music and tasting an array of inspiring wines. Is there a better way to…

Dirty Laundry Vineyard has been long known for its white wines, cleaning up in awards competitions with its Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Secret Affair blend. In recent years, as the red wine program has expanded, Dirty Laundry has received accolades for selections such as Bordello and Cabernet Merlot, and this year Kay Syrah was awarded a gold medal at the Pacific Rim International Wine Competition. It’s little wonder that Dirty Laundry has been expanding its red portfolio and this year for the first time, the winery has produced a single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. Pick up yours soon because…

The cycles of the moon are an important feature in every Farmer’s Almanac; the celestial influence that rules the tides of every sea and ocean are also considered an important element in agricultural management throughout the seasons. And so it is at Lunessence, where sustainable and environmentally sensitive viticultural practices work with the seasons of nature and cycles of the moon. Winemaker Michal Mosny and viticulturist Martina Mosny are responsible for the recent accolades and interest in Lunessence wines. Martina works with the vineyard as a living and varied ecosystem. By integrating biodynamic practices in the vineyard, she focuses on…

Plato reportedly once said, “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” How inspiring. Now let’s add a little wine to the music or music to the wine, and we become uplifted, joyous. Stress is released, tongues and ties loosen, friends and lovers unite, and the world becomes a happier place. Music and wine – a glorious coupling, a gift from the gods sent to relieve humankind from the daily worries and woes. Does that sound a little too much?…

Dirty Laundry Vineyard currently swings open the wine shop doors, seven days a week from 10 am to 5 pm, and the first bottling of 2017 is in the books. The winemakers have been busy getting several new vintages ready for tasting, including the highly popular Virgin Viognier, which sold out in record time last year. Virgin Viognier is described as pure, smooth and delightfully racy. Says Lauren Selfridge, Bordello Club manager “She explodes with aromatics the moment her cap is released. It’s a perfect wine for food pairing or sipping on its own.” Test it yourself on the newly…

It’s said that “laughter is the best medicine” and clearly the fun loving, if somewhat naughty, theme at Dirty Laundry Vineyard is just what the doctor ordered. From the “clothesline” you glimpse hanging to mark the entry of this Summerland winery to the labels on the wine that you’ll be purchasing to take home, no opportunity is missed to set the tone for an entertaining visit. The theme is based on local lore that a Chinese laundry here in the early 1900s had a bordello on the second floor. Hence, you’ll find risqué motifs mixed with laundry references. Just go…

While the Bottleneck Drive region is really known for the wineries, this summer Dirty Laundry Winery proved that wine lovers and beer lovers are sometimes one and the same. Their ever-popular patio started serving up their version of BC’s best beer, a line called “Laundry Suds”, brewed especially for the winery by Bridge Brewing in North Vancouver. While the wines by the glass and bottle were definitely flowing, kegs of their Dirty Blond Kolsch, Brunette IPA, Full House Pale Ale and the Red Head Wheat Ale were being rapidly depleted. The winery served up pints and many opted for the…

When Michal Mosny and wife Martina opened Lunessence, just last year, they brought a unique touch to both the land and the art of wine making. The philosophy in the vineyard is one of melody and grace; here, it is the wellbeing of the whole environment that is maintained.   Visitors may be pleasantly surprised by the classical music that is piped throughout the vineyard and the winery, filling the air with euphonious notes, and perhaps adding to the wine a quality of harmony. Lunessence marries tradition with exploration, European sophistication with new world progression, and in between the extremes…
