Plato reportedly once said, “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” How inspiring. Now let’s add a little wine to the music or music to the wine, and we become uplifted, joyous. Stress is released, tongues and ties loosen, friends and lovers unite, and the world becomes a happier place. Music and wine – a glorious coupling, a gift from the gods sent to relieve humankind from the daily worries and woes. Does that sound a little too much?…

Dirty Laundry Vineyard currently swings open the wine shop doors, seven days a week from 10 am to 5 pm, and the first bottling of 2017 is in the books. The winemakers have been busy getting several new vintages ready for tasting, including the highly popular Virgin Viognier, which sold out in record time last year. Virgin Viognier is described as pure, smooth and delightfully racy. Says Lauren Selfridge, Bordello Club manager “She explodes with aromatics the moment her cap is released. It’s a perfect wine for food pairing or sipping on its own.” Test it yourself on the newly…

It’s said that “laughter is the best medicine” and clearly the fun loving, if somewhat naughty, theme at Dirty Laundry Vineyard is just what the doctor ordered. From the “clothesline” you glimpse hanging to mark the entry of this Summerland winery to the labels on the wine that you’ll be purchasing to take home, no opportunity is missed to set the tone for an entertaining visit. The theme is based on local lore that a Chinese laundry here in the early 1900s had a bordello on the second floor. Hence, you’ll find risqué motifs mixed with laundry references. Just go…

While the Bottleneck Drive region is really known for the wineries, this summer Dirty Laundry Winery proved that wine lovers and beer lovers are sometimes one and the same. Their ever-popular patio started serving up their version of BC’s best beer, a line called “Laundry Suds”, brewed especially for the winery by Bridge Brewing in North Vancouver. While the wines by the glass and bottle were definitely flowing, kegs of their Dirty Blond Kolsch, Brunette IPA, Full House Pale Ale and the Red Head Wheat Ale were being rapidly depleted. The winery served up pints and many opted for the…

When Michal Mosny and wife Martina opened Lunessence, just last year, they brought a unique touch to both the land and the art of wine making. The philosophy in the vineyard is one of melody and grace; here, it is the wellbeing of the whole environment that is maintained.   Visitors may be pleasantly surprised by the classical music that is piped throughout the vineyard and the winery, filling the air with euphonious notes, and perhaps adding to the wine a quality of harmony. Lunessence marries tradition with exploration, European sophistication with new world progression, and in between the extremes…

What’s an anniversary without wine, music, family, gift wrap and presents? Thornhaven Estates Winery is happily awash in all the above as it celebrates 15 great years, making it Summerland’s oldest family-run winery. Anniversary gifts are pouring in for the winery. Thornhaven took Gold for its 2015 Gewürztraminer at the All Canadian Wine Championships and the BC Best of Varietal Spring Wine Awards. Its special anniversary XV Syrah also took Gold at the BC Best of Varietal Spring Wine Awards. “Every time we are acknowledged with an award for our wines it’s a great compliment to our winemaker (son) Jason…

“Art is a kind of mining,” he said. “The artist a variety of prospector searching for the sparkling silver of meaning in the earth,” wrote Canadian author Jane Urquhart in her book, The Underpainter. A treasure trove of jewelry and unique gift items such as gemstones has been offered for more than 25 years at DeLong Studio, which you’ll find in the Trout Creek area of Summerland just off Highway 97. Those in the know have been mining this boutique shop for years with the majority of DeLong’s customers as returning clients, many for 20 years or more. As they…

“For those who doubt the influence of moon, music, and eco-friendly farming practices the proof of quality is clear in the tasting.” If a wine is the expression of the terroir, then what goes in, on and around the terroir is of the utmost importance. Some of the most significant high-end wine producers today have converted to biodynamic practices, and the secret to the success of wines lies in the soil.   This summer, all wine lovers looking for a wine of superior purity and quality should take a trip down to Lunessence, where this little-known winery produces truly delicious…

Pull up a red chair, pop open some lovely pink frizzante-style Infusion, soak in the stunning views and drink a toast to the 15th anniversary of Thornhaven Estates Winery. This down-to-earth adobe-style winery with its way up in the sky views of vineyards, canyon and Lake Okanagan is a cause for celebration.   Summerland’s oldest family-run winery began life as a retirement project by Jan and Jack Fraser. They have been at it long enough to call it their second career project while changing the lives of their son Jason, (Thornhaven Estate’s winemaker, cellarmaster and vineyard manager) and daughter Cortney.…
