It’s fitting that traditional 10-year anniversary gifts are tin or aluminum, materials symbolizing the “durability and flexibility to sustain a loving union,” according to Wikipedia. Since officially opening on July 5, 2008, Kalala Organic Estate Winery has captured “the heart and soul of founder and owner Karnail Singh Sidhu, his family and the team he gathered,” says Tibor Erdelyi, winemaker. Erdelyi explains, “When Karnail immigrated to Canada in 1993, he found his electrical engineering credentials weren’t recognized. He jokes that you can’t call yourself Punjabi if you don’t have farming roots. So Karnail began working with his hands in orchards…

While tame and docile today, the rolling hills of West Kelowna hide a more explosive past. The volcanic legacy of this region is still found today in the region’s mineral rich soil, which leaves a uniquely identifiable mark on the grapes that grow in the shadow of Mount Boucherie, the now extinct volcano. One of the younger, but already well-established wineries here, Volcanic Hills Estate Winery, has tapped into this distinct terroir and built a prominent name for itself through award-winning wines that reflect this rich volcanic soil. Recently, there also seems to be a lot of gold that is…

Vacations are rarely as relaxing as they’re meant to be. All the stress of rushing up and down the valley, down dead-end roads and along busy highways looking for the winery that your friends told you about. What was its name? Why not just escape all that hustle and bustle and enjoy the summer visiting an authentic slice of Italy right here in the Okanagan. High along the West Kelowna Farm Loop, nestled at the end of a scenic country road, sits Ciao Bella Winery — and it is truly a little piece of Napoli. The winery is the long-held…

The vision is clear for Mt. Boucherie Winery as construction commences on its brand new experience centre scheduled for completion in spring 2020. Named for the former volcano active more than 60 million years ago, Mt. Boucherie experienced its own volatility a few years ago and went into receivership. And just as the volcano created optimum soil conditions for grape growing, Mt. Boucherie has emerged stronger than ever. Its wines were protected through the process under the custodianship of award-winning winemaker Jim Faulkner. With new ownership since April 2016, Mt. Boucherie has a bright future with a focus on revitalizing…

Many years ago the violent eruptions of volcanoes gave shape to our valley and left in their wake a unique volcanic legacy in the rich soils they left behind. Nestled beneath the shadows of the now dormant Mount Boucherie, Volcanic Hills Estate Winery is blessed with this distinguished terroir that’s showcased in the distinctive notes of its award winning wines. As geology has eliminated the need to keep watch on the mountain, patrons should instead be turning their attention to the winery’s social media accounts for details on events, new releases and Wine of the Month! This May, the spotlight…

Perched atop the West Kelowna Farm Loop, away from the echoes of the city below, the rustic traditions of rural Neapolitan Italy have taken root at Ciao Bella Winery. This little patch of West Kelowna has been transformed into an authentic piece of Napoli in our own backyard. In their quaint family home, surrounded by vineyards and blessed with a cosy garden-lined picnicking space, the Fiume family — Roberto and Sharon, as well as their children Antonio and Olivia — invite guests into their famiglia with award winning wines, cappuccinos and Spuntini (charcuterie — the Italian way). As the summer…

Adding another world-class-level medal to its impressive list of accolades, Kalala Organic Estate Winery stepped to the podium again at the Chardonnay du Monde competition in France. The 2016 Chardonnay Icewine won second among 679 competitors from 39 wine-producing countries at the 2018 competition. Top gold medal was awarded to Liquidity Estate Winery of Okanagan Falls. According to Kalala founder and owner Karnail Singh Sidhu, “Chardonnay du Monde is our Olympics and we’re proud of our second and of Liquidity’s first place. Shining the light through being judged the world’s two top Chardonnays is good for the Okanagan and BC…

As spring heralds rebirth and inspiration, SpearHead Winery is excited to welcome Grant Stanley, a highly esteemed BC winemaker as the new winemaker/general manager. He’ll be hands-on in vineyard and winemaking operations and will manage the winery. Stanley launched his winemaking career in New Zealand where he worked for 10 years. During that time, he spent a few harvests in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, working with leading Pinot Noir producers. Since 2003, he has been in the Okanagan establishing himself as a premier BC winemaker. Proprietor Bill Knutson says, “Well-known as a Pinot Noir specialist and great guy, Grant is perfect…

The winter season was quiet atop West Kelowna’s Farm Loop, where Ciao Bella Winery sits apart from the hustle and bustle of the city below. But while the season lay quiet, owners Roberto and Sharon Fiume along with kids Antonio and Olivia worked hard to release to the public a precious gift from the season, the 2017 Dolce Vino – a uniquely Italian take on the ice wine! A festive and seasonal cherry-blossom-pink in colour, the Dolce Vino is sweet and made from red grapes. It greets the drinker with a burst of dark cherry on the palate but finishes…

At Volcanic Hills Estate Winery, they believe in the adage that good wine begins in the vineyard, and it’s clearly working for them.
