From the beginning, hands-on owners Larry Gerelus and Linda Pruegger didn’t shy away from trying something new for the region. With their winemaker sharing innovative inclinations, together they’ve followed their passion to gain a reputation as being adventurous while creating award-winning wines. In 2011, Stag’s Hollow planted its Shuttleworth Creek Vineyard with many varietals new to the Okanagan. These varietals included two Italian — dolcetto and teroldago — and two Spanish — albarino and tempranillo. In the portfolio at Stag’s Hollow, there are also grenache and vidal (basis of the fruity wine Tragically Vidal that has gained a cult following).…

Recognition for the quality of Nighthawk Vineyards wines continues. Owners Christy and Daniel Bibby have learned that their 2016 Chardonnay won a competition in Norway and will be stocked in 59 stores across the country. Says Daniel, “This marks the first time we’ve shipped internationally. We were thrilled to load four pallets destined for Norway.” Norway has a highly restrictive wine monopoly regulating the sale of alcohol over 4.75 per cent ABV (alcohol by volume) to a single government-owned provider, Vinmonopolet. To be considered, a winery must first be invited, submit according to strict guidelines and then undergo a blind…

Join Naramata Bench Wineries Association’s (NBWA) annual Tailgate Party on Saturday, September 8 at the Naramata Heritage Inn. This year’s theme is “Bootleg Bash,” celebrating the building of the Naramata Heritage Inn and the founding of Naramata in the early 1900s. How fitting to convene the 28-NBWA member wineries with Naramata restaurant chefs at the Naramata Heritage Inn for one of the Okanagan’s best harvest parties of the season. The Naramata Hotel, precursor to the inn, was built 110 years ago by John Moore Robinson, who also started the fruit industry in the region. Hats for men and women were…

For family-owned Moraine Estate Winery, receiving accolades creates golden moments for the whole family and team. The most recent accomplishment was seen in the Okanagan Life Magazine 2018 Best of BC Wine Awards in which Moraine Estate received gold medals for Pinot Noir 2016 and Cliffhanger Red 2016. The Cliffhanger Red 2016 — made with handpicked Merlot and Malbec grapes grown on the Anastasia Vineyard, fermented in French Oak and bottled on-site had already achieved prestigious recognition, winning silver medals at the 2016 International Fingers Lake Wine Competition in New York and the 2016 WineAlign National Awards of Canada. Highly…

The story of Crescent Hill Winery began with Teresa Murray’s father, Glennallyn, and his passion for winemaking. Roughly 40 years ago, he was inspired to sell his real estate holdings in Port Moody, BC, and buy land to establish one of Penticton’s earliest vineyards. He did so when his close friend, the winemaker Tom Hoenisch, moved to Penticton’s first urban winery, the former Casabello Wines. Teresa fulfilled her father’s 1999 deathbed wish to take the vineyard business to the next level by licensing the winery. Glennallyn’s family had always helped in farmgate duties and the vineyards, so establishing the winery…

It’s fitting that traditional 10-year anniversary gifts are tin or aluminum, materials symbolizing the “durability and flexibility to sustain a loving union,” according to Wikipedia. Since officially opening on July 5, 2008, Kalala Organic Estate Winery has captured “the heart and soul of founder and owner Karnail Singh Sidhu, his family and the team he gathered,” says Tibor Erdelyi, winemaker. Erdelyi explains, “When Karnail immigrated to Canada in 1993, he found his electrical engineering credentials weren’t recognized. He jokes that you can’t call yourself Punjabi if you don’t have farming roots. So Karnail began working with his hands in orchards…

The vision is clear for Mt. Boucherie Winery as construction commences on its brand new experience centre scheduled for completion in spring 2020. Named for the former volcano active more than 60 million years ago, Mt. Boucherie experienced its own volatility a few years ago and went into receivership. And just as the volcano created optimum soil conditions for grape growing, Mt. Boucherie has emerged stronger than ever. Its wines were protected through the process under the custodianship of award-winning winemaker Jim Faulkner. With new ownership since April 2016, Mt. Boucherie has a bright future with a focus on revitalizing…

The excitement continues at SpearHead Winery as Grant Stanley makes his mark as winemaker/general manager with a newly constructed production facility that opened in July. Stanley’s passion for Pinot Noir is a perfect match and his input helped ensure SpearHead’s winemaking building was purpose-built for Pinot Noir production. Once the previous production area is converted to a barrel room, it will create new options to enhance your tasting room experience. Watch for upcoming tours that begin in the vineyard, continue through the new production facility and end in the barrel room with a special tasting that includes barrel samples. Pinot…
