Best New Winery of 2011: Volcanic Hills Estate Winery

Allison Fader · May 31, 2012 ·

Voted Best New Winery of 2011, Volcanic Hills Estate Winery of West Kelowna continues to garner awards and devoted fans. Silver medals were recently awarded at the New World International Wine Competition in California to its 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009 Pinot Noir and 2010 Gewürztraminer.

Having celebrated its 2nd anniversary in May, the winery is proud to release its Estate-grown and bottled selection of premium varietals for the 2011 vintage.  Though the vintage was a challenging one, Proprietor Bobby Gidda is pleased that they were able to maintain high quality across their portfolio of wines.  Gamay will be released as their ever-popular Rosé; the approximately 1000 case lot is sure to be a sell-out, as is their Pinot Gris.  In addition, 2011 releases include Gewürztraminer, a white blend  labelled as Magma White and a new Magma Rosé which will be available exclusively at the wine shop.

A repeat of last year’s popular “Summer Sizzler BBQ” will be held on July 7, featuring Indian-spiced BBQ treats, tours and three gift baskets as door prizes.  The winery’s spacious patio is available for special events such as weddings, anniversaries or corporate events such as employee recognition days.

2011 Gewürztraminer  $17.90

The lovely floral/stone-fruit nose gives way to beautifully balanced flavours of peach, pear and citrus.  Refreshingly clean on the palate, this wine will be a favourite patio sipper as well as a wonderful complement to Indian or Thai dishes.

2011 Rosé  $18.90

This 100% single-vineyard Gamay shows a pale salmon colour, with strawberry on the nose and palate, accented by peach and citrus overtones. Off-dry, with a long finish, this is sure to be another summer favourite on its own or paired with lighter fare.
