Covert Farms – A Mecca of Organic Growing & Innovation

Jennifer Schell · June 4, 2012 ·

Gene and Shelly Covert have created an amazing agri-tourism and agri-entertainment destination in Oliver.
Not only do they make organic, award-winning wine – touting new labels with new name Covert Farms Family Estate Winery (formerly known as Dunham & Froese), they are a huge organic farm operation. The farm offers an on-site fruit and vegetable stand, a delicious restaurant and fun activities for the kids including a Corn Maze and Farm Mini Golf.

Ever wanted to pick your own multi-coloured heirloom tomatoes? The Coverts offer a huge u-pick garden that includes a multitude of beautiful organic fare from strawberries to heirloom tomatoes. They also offer an organic home delivery service so customers can enjoy a seasonal mixed box of their fruits, vegetables and berries delivered to their door.

This buzzing hive of the quintessential Okanagan farm life is a treat to visit. Make sure to check out their event schedule this summer – they are hosting an Outstanding in the Field dinner on July 18th and their Covert’s Annual Festival of the Tomato event on September 2nd.

What we all love about the Covert family is how they give back. Not only do they grow healthy food for our families to eat, they also are sharing that knowledge with the next generation through their Young Organic Farmers camps. After the huge success of last year’s programs, Shelly Covert says they will be splitting the camps into two – a Beginner and one Advanced for those who have attended last year or those who have some knowledge already. This innovative teaching is imperative to the future of our farming community and health of next generation – and its fun too.
