Party Pigs and Growler Clubs at Cannery Brewing

Allison Fader · September 5, 2012 ·

What’s a ‘Growler’?  Rather than an unhappy  dog  – it could be your new best friend!  This innovation recently introduced by Cannery Brewing in Penticton is a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly way for beer consumers to enjoy the variety of brews that Cannery produces.  It’s a 2 litre glass jug that can be refilled multiple times with your choice of regular, seasonal or limited-release beer.  Growler Club members receive their own Growler with its first fill for $20, along with their Club card (one free fill after 10 paid refills).  Members are notified of upcoming fill schedules and can then return for refills at $10 or $12, depending on the brew.

The only preservative that goes into Cannery Brewing’s beer is hops – the more, the longer beer keeps.  India Pale Ale style beer’s ‘hopiness’ is derived from the historical need to preserve beer for its long ocean trip from England to India.  Cannery Brewing’s India Pale Ale is a complex brew showing a rich malt foundation with lingering hop finish.  The Brewery also produces several pale ales, a lager, amber ale and Scotch ale.  Most popular of all is their Nut Brown Ale which is layered, with a round, velvety character and beautifully smooth finish. While visiting the Tasting and Retail Room, be sure to try some of their artisanal brews.  The Apricot Wheat Ale shows a delicate flavour of apricots – crisp, clean drinking for a hot day!  If you like something with a bit more body, try the Blackberry Porter, which displays lovely blueberry notes, or the Maple Stout – a toasty dark malt with a touch of maple sweetness, which is also great for cooking salmon, short ribs or other flavourful  dishes. >For your entertaining, rent a ‘party pig’ full of your favourite brew – it fits in the refrigerator – and check out the new release of SS Sicamous Lakeboat Lager – great for toasting the Valley’s Fall bounty! ~ Allison Fader
