Poppadoms – Taste India with an Okanagan Twist!

Contributor · September 11, 2012 ·

When the Dosanj family made Kelowna their home, opening Poppadoms Restaurant in 2009, Indian food in the city would never be the same. The Dosanj’s use only the best ingredients, working with local suppliers, and sourcing only sustainable seafood to develop their eclectic menu. The dishes give nods to a variety of India’s regions, as opposed to just sticking to the usual Punjabi fare.

In keeping with the seasons, Poppadoms presents dishes that can be described as light and delicate. You’ll find twists on classics such as a lightly spiced Crab Cake, Bengali Fish, a Halibut in mustard sauce with mango chilli and coconut milk, and Seafood Moilee, a BC Ling Cod and Dungeness Crab served in a coconut and ginger sauce, along with the more traditional items such as Butter Chicken and Tikka Masala. The restaurant sources their spicesdirectly from India to ensure freshness and even grind their own masala spice mix.

At lunch the restaurant offers delivery in environmentally friendly tiffins, reusable meta containers, and will deliver and pick up for a minimal charge. Choose from a meat dish and two veggie dishes that change daily; perhaps the Butter Chicken or a Goan-style Fish Curry.
Cooking classes are also offered the first Saturday of each month where you’ll learn quick, simple and healthy Indian recipes and can purchase your own spice kit at a discount.

Even with some of the lighter dishes, pairing Indian food with appropriate beverages can b tricky, but Poppadoms has the solution where their homemade cocktails, local BC wine and beer list and many non-alcoholic offerings.
