SPIRIT RIDGE LAKE RESORT: A PLACE OF STORY

Lesley Buxton · May 1, 2018 ·

From the moment one arrives at Spirit Ridge Lake Resort one senses the difference. There’s so much to take in: the adobe-style suites, the breathtaking views of Osoyoos Lake, the vine covered hills, the majestic peak of Anarchist Mountain, the fragrance of desert sage.

Here visitors are greeted by The Chief, a symbolic metal sculpture created by Smoker Marchand. The perfect emblem for a resort that prides itself on its sense of hospitality, The Chief offers visitors the peace pipe as they arrive.

Situated in the migratory destination and home of the Osoyoos Indian Band, every inch of the landscape here is imbued with history. For thousands of years this land has provided both spiritual and physical sustenance for a people known for their rich cultural, spiritual and artistic traditions.

Everything the modern traveller needs is here — be prepared, you might never want to leave. This is an oasis with a full range of amenities: two pools, hot tubs, a fitness centre and access to a private beach where you can watch the kids play in the lake or simply read your book. Feeling adventurous? Hike the nearby trails, visit the nine-hole Sonora Dunes Golf Course with its gorgeous views of the Okanagan Range, or take an afternoon to explore the NK’MIP Desert Cultural Centre. This wonderful museum, located on the resort, chronicles the narrative of the Osoyoos Indian Band and their land through a series of interactive walks.

Afterwards, amble over to NK’MIP Cellars Winery, the first Aboriginal-owned winery in North America, and located on the resort. Take your time, chat with a friend over a glass of the 2015 Merlot or wander through the hotel and take a moment to admire one of Dorothy Tinning’s paintings or an unexpected view. Hungry? Check out one of the resort’s three eateries, the Mica Restaurant, the patio at NK’MIP Winery and the Spirit Beach Cantina.

Always mindful of its cultural heritage, Spirit Ridge engages this connection in every aspect of its facility, from its architecture to the treatments offered at Solterra Desert Spa.

A world unto itself, Spirit Ridge is the perfect definition of a getaway. An escape from the stress of modern life. A stay here is defined by stories — the stories you tell while gazing at an Okanagan night filled with stars, or years later as you reminisce about this divine place.
