STAYING FRESH AT BUY THE SEA

Jenna Hickman · June 22, 2018 ·

For those living in the Okanagan, fresh produce is easy to come by. It’s also easy to get delicious fresh sea food at Buy the Sea in Penticton and West Kelowna. They’ve been providing locals with fresh seafood for over two decades.

“Coming into summer, our local waters provide a bounty of fish,” says Buy the Sea owner Mike Stokes. “Just the other day we started to get fresh sea asparagus from southern Vancouver Island. It’s very similar in appearance to regular asparagus, thinner than a pencil and very salty. A lot of people will chop it up to put in salads as a garnish.”

Summer is barbecue season. There’s nothing better than fresh Alaskan and BC sockeye salmon, or wild spring salmon from the west coast of Vancouver Island. You can get them all at Buy the Sea. In early July, you can also get Snow Pass Alaska Coho.

However, Stokes’ go-to summertime meal is not salmon: “My favourite is definitely halibut done up on my barbecue with a cilantro lime vinaigrette from Okanagan Dressings in Naramata.”

From seafood to vinaigrettes, Stokes uses local products as much as possible. For the past five years, Buy the Sea has partnered with different local wineries to pair seafood recipes with delicious wine. The recipes and pairings are featured in Buy the Sea’s newsletter. Sign up online or in-store for a free copy!

For those who want to skip the cooking, Buy the Sea has an in-house Fish n’Chip Shop, featuring North Pacific Grey Cod, fresh halibut, fresh seafood chowder and more. For a summertime picnic, order the Baja fish tacos and head to the beach.

When you’re not sure what to have, one of the Buy the Sea seafood experts will be happy to help!

Buy the Sea is located at 2100 Main Street in Penticton and 2231 Louie Drive in West Kelowna.
